Adam Coutcher
Landscape, Oil Paint, Fine Artist

My name is Adam Coutcher, and I’m a fine artist from the Toledo, Ohio area.  I’m constantly captivated by all the beauty and color in all God’s creation, and I love being able to share that with others through paint. Many times, I walk in the woods, and I just feel the Lord’s peace all around, and to communicate those emotions and feelings, is one of my favorite goals to try and accomplish. I hope that through my art, you too may have those same experiences I’ve had in nature, and that these paintings become more than just art to you, but an deep connection that speaks to your heart!

My Journey in Art

Early Childhood

As a kid drawing was one of my favorite past times. I remember spending hours drawing random sketches in my little sketchbook and expressing whatever was in my imagination. There was a certain freedom to it and no boundaries other than my own creativity. As I got older, I gradually embraced the love of details, and the challenge of creating a sense of realism on paper. Something about art, that has always resonated with me, is how forgiving it can be. I can draw, erase, and redraw to my heart’s content, till my vision comes to life. I think that is what's made art always feel like a safe place and has allowed me to grow and experiment with my creativity.

Graduating High School

After high school, my skill sets were not only in art, but math and science too. When college came, I decided to pursue a mechanical engineering degree, and in 2017, I graduated with my Bachelor of Science at the University of Toledo. However, after about 3 years working full time as an engineer, I realized there was something in me that was missing. As I started to talk to the Lord about it, He began to really encourage me to revisit my art again. After much prayer, I decided to take a leap of faith and start a small business as an oil painter/entrepreneur.

What I've Learned as an Artist and Entrepreneur

Starting a business has been one of the most challenging and rewarding goals to accomplish. There is so much behind the scenes, from the business side of creating a LLC, designing a website, learning about shipping, taxes, privacy policy, ecommerce, marketing, pricing, and scheduling, to the creative side of painting, developing a portfolio, photography, color correcting, and print proofing. A great deal of effort is involved when creating a business. However, I feel that these challenges have made me more well rounded in my skill sets and have not only helped me become a better artist, but a better entrepreneur!

I am still an engineer, and although some may think art and engineering are two very different spectrums, I feel they can very much go hand in hand. As an engineer, I not only create solutions to solve mechanical problems, but I bring my imagination and creativity to develop designs that push the boundaries of the standard, in an aesthetically pleasing way. On the other hand as an artist, one must be diligent and organized to track all financial data, taxes, expenses, timecards, and portfolio details. Using Excel daily in my engineering career, gave me the tools to produce the frame work for a growing business model.

Overall, starting a business for the first time has been such an amazing learning experience. It's definitely not easy to do, but I feel it certainly has given me new tools to explore and develop in both my careers as an artist/entrepreneur and engineer.

The Journey Continues

As I continue on this journey, I hope you will come along for the ride, and with each painting, experience the Lord’s love, joy, and peace in your life. I also hope that you will not forget about your dreams and passions. We all have unique gifts and callings, some in multiple areas, and it's never too late to explore and revisit those old passions from your childhood. The Lord places those desires in our hearts for a reason and you might just be surprised what you can do with just a little faith!

Special Thanks

I also want to say a special thank you to my wife Hannah for supporting me, and for always encouraging me to continue to pursue and follow my dreams!
